Necropolis Title Page

  1. NECROPOLIS - Title Page - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears as the title page in, "Necropolis." by Basil Copper, published by Arkham House in 1980.

One of the problems an illustrator has to deal with occassionally, is the requirement to leave room in a drawing for lettering, some kind of text. Since this drawing was going to be used on the title page of the book, I had to leave space for lettering on the right side of the drawing; at the top-right I left space for the title and author's name, and on the bottom-right I left space for the publisher's name and address.

The drawing is therefore skewed, by neccessity, and when it was returned to me I had an urge to finish it. I've sold just about all the drawings and paintings that I've done throughout my career and I've always been tempted to "finish" them after publication. I only did it a couple of times, but I did not touch this one.

An Illustration, as a work of "Art," can therefore be handicapped because of restrictions made on it by the publisher. Nevertheless, it is still a work of art and can be judged by the quality of its rendition.
